AEO vs GEO: Does the difference matter and what’s next for SEO?

If you feel like a new acronym about search and AI shows up every week, you’re not alone. We’re right there with you.

SEO. AEO. GEO. LLM optimization. AI search.

At this point, they’re just making them up, right?

But there’s good news! You don’t need to become an expert in every new term to understand what’s changing in search engine optimization or what your organization should do about it.

AEO and GEO describe real changes in how people find information online. But the difference between the two matters far less than understanding the bigger shift happening in search and making sure your website is ready for it.

AEO vs GEO: What’s the difference?

Let’s start with the acronyms.

AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization, asksCan your content become the answer?

AEO focuses on making your website clear, useful and trustworthy enough to appear when search experiences provide users with direct answers rather than simply a list of links.

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, asksCan your content become a trusted source or recommendation inside an AI-generated response?

Think tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity, where users can ask detailed questions and receive conversational responses synthesized from multiple sources.

However! Even within the search industry, AEO and GEO are often defined slightly differently or used interchangeably. The distinction is useful but not necessary to focus on.

Our team prefers AEO as an umbrella term, and we cannot stress enough: don’t worry about the labels.

What matters most is making sure your organization can be found, understood and trusted as search evolves.

Does SEO still matter?

Very much so!

Good AEO starts with good SEO.

The foundations that help traditional search engines understand your website also speak to AI-driven search tools. Your site still needs to be technically sound, easy to navigate and filled with useful, relevant information that clearly communicates who you are and why you matter.

AEO builds on those fundamentals rather than replacing them.

Think of it this way:
SEO gets your house in order.
AEO helps that house show up in new kinds of search experiences.

The right strategy is not to abandon SEO and start over. Instead, expand how you think about search, so your website can perform across traditional results, AI-generated answers and more.

Why should your business care about AI search?

Because search is becoming more conversational, and that’s to your advantage.

People are increasingly asking complex questions, comparing their options and researching decisions in ways that look more like conversations than typing a few keywords or topics into a search bar.

The key insight is that AI is actually making the search experience more human!

For years, search engines rewarded content written primarily for algorithms: awkward keyword placement, repetitive language or pages created more for rankings than for the people reading them.

AI-driven search puts more value on content that is clear, useful and genuinely worth sharing between humans.

Organizations with real expertise, strong stories and helpful information have new opportunities to become part of the answer without fighting giant sites with syndicated content or a long history of high traffic.

What makes a website ready for AEO?

There’s no single switch you can flip to make your website “AEO ready.” Focus on these fundamentals:

  • Start with a strong technical foundation. Search engines and AI platforms need to access, understand and navigate your site. Performance, structure and accessibility still matter.
  • Create content people actually need. Answer real audience questions clearly and offer useful expertise, context and perspective.
  • Tell a cohesive story. AI search looks beyond isolated keywords. Your site should clearly communicate who you are, what you know and why your organization is credible.
  • Measure the bigger picture. AI visibility is worth tracking, but it’s just one piece of your overall site performance. Search rankings, traffic, engagement, conversions and AI visibility should work together to tell you whether your website meets your goals.

And perhaps most importantly: don’t start writing for robots.

The future of search is increasingly human. Clear language, natural storytelling and useful answers make your site easier for people to understand and give technology better information to work with.

Where Koch Comm fits in

Your website needs the technical foundation that allows search engines and AI platforms to understand it, but it also needs a compelling human story worth understanding in the first place.

That means your web partner should have:

  • Technical web expertise
  • Strategic content and storytelling expertise
  • A commitment to evolving with search and technology

Koch Comm brings web development, content strategy, branding, public relations and audience insight together under one team. Our experts understand the technical side of search while our storytellers understand how to communicate naturally with the people you want to reach.

That lets us ask:

Can technology understand your website?
And:
Is what it understands useful, credible and worth recommending?

We build new websites with these considerations from the beginning. For organizations with an existing website, we can also help identify where you stand and the strongest opportunities for improvement.

Give your website a clear path forward

Search is changing, but you don’t have to keep up with it on your own. What matters is knowing where your website stands, what needs attention and what’s worth doing next.

That’s where we can help!

We’ll look at how your website performs across traditional and AI-driven search and turn those findings into a prioritized execution plan that helps you make sense of the changes. From there, our team sets clear priorities, gets the work done and tracks progress.

As search keeps evolving, we’re here to be a partner that can bring clarity, direction and confidence to your website.
